Torres Valencia Lecture

A l’instar de la communauté internationale, le Système des Nations Unies au Gabon a tenu à célébrer, ce 24 octobre 2018, la Journée des Nations Unies. Au regard du contexte électoral qui prévaut sur toute l’étendue du territoire national, cette célébration a été principalement marquée par la lecture du message du Secrétaire général de l’ONU et la présentation de quelques réalisations majeures au Gabon par Monsieur Stephen Jackson, Coordonnateur résident du Système des Nations Unies au Gabon.

Putting every child in school, improving the quality of learning and fostering global citizenship are the three principles of the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) launched by the United Nations in 2012.

After two world wars, members of the United Nations decided it was time for, in the words of its motto, “building peace in the minds of men and women.” But to do that, they needed more than economic and political agreements. They needed to establish worldwide solidarity by promoting scientific and cultural understanding, uplifting democracy, and defeating poverty.

With a world population of 7 billion people and limited natural resources, we, as individuals and societies need to learn to live together sustainably. We need to take action responsibly based on the understanding that what we do today can have implications on the lives of people and the planet in future. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) empowers people to change the way they think and work towards a sustainable future.

UNESCO has just launched its new publication on Global Citizenship Education (GCED) titled Global Citizenship Education: Topics and Learning Objectives. This is the first pedagogical guidance on GCED produced by UNESCO in an effort to help Member States integrate GCED in their education systems, formal and non-formal.
